Literacy Corner
From the Literacy Corner:
High Frequency Words: High frequency words are the most common words in a particular language.
Sight Words: Sight words are any word a student can see and say instantly.
We want readers at Elm Hill to master High Frequency Words (HFWs) so that they become Sight Words. Help them at home with fun sight word games!
Fun Facts for English HFWs:
- Just 13 words make up 25% of text
- 100 words account for about 50% of common text
Goals:
- In PreK: we help students learn a few high frequency words such as: a, I, you, and, me.
- In Kindergarten we help students learn between 50 and 100 HFW words.
- In First Grade we help students master 100-300 HFW words.
Reading (and learning!) is fun. So keep reading!
